Installing and Configuring Windows Server 2012: Vanilla Installation Part 2

In this post we will discuss how to perform some basic configurations on your new server installation to get it ready for bigger and better services.

We will discuss:
    • How to change the time zone in Windows Server 2012
    • How to change the IP address in Windows Server 2012
    • How to change the name and how to add the system to a domain in Windows Server 2012
    • How to enable remote desktop in Windows Server 2012 
Before starting any of the how-to's you will need to login to your new installation of Windows server 2012 and click on "Configure this Local Server".  From this page you will be able to configure all items in the list above and prep your server for roles and features.


How to change the time zone in Windows Server 2012



  • Click the link next to time zone which will open the Date and Time dialog box.  Then click Change Time Zone

How to change IP Address in Windows Server 2012


  • Click the link next to Ethernet0 or the desired NIC to open the Network Connections Menu


  • Right click the NIC you would like to set an IP on and click Properties


  • Highlight IPv4 and click Properties then set the appropriate IP information, then save by clicking OK


How to Change the Name and Add System to Domain in Windows Server 2012



  • Click the randomly generated name next to Computer Name to open the System properties menu


  • Click the Change button to access the Computer Name/Domain Changes Menu


  • Change the Computer name by typing in the Computer name text box
  • Change the domain by selecting the Domain radio button and entering the FQDN of the domain or the NETBIOS short name of the domain you would like to add the computer to
  • You will need to reboot the server after making these changes
